Laboratory results of the natural gas samples collected about ten (10) feet downwind (Southwest) of the SS-25 well site are provided below. Because these samples were collected near the area where the gas is being released into the air -- and, for safety reasons, not directly from the underground natural gas storage field itself -- the natural gas sampled was somewhat diluted in ambient air. However, in order to estimate the amount of certain compounds in the natural gas being released, the SCAQMD used the ratio of methane (the major component of natural gas) to other compounds detected in one of the samples. The results showed that there was approximately 7 parts per million (ppm) of Benzene, 10 ppm of Toluene and 5 ppm of Xylene present in the natural gas that was being released into the air. These concentrations are consistent with the concentration of same compounds measured in the sample that SoCalGas collected as well. The benzene concentration is well within the ranges reported for natural gas.
