WHAT ADDITIONAL RESOURCES ARE AVAILABLE FOR PERC DRY CLEANERS?

The following resources are available to perc dry cleaners who need assistance in understanding and complying with air quality rules and permit conditions:

Local agency resources

AQMD Self-Inspection Checklist. This list, used by AQMD Inspectors, can also be used by owners and operators of dry cleaning operations to ensure compliance with rule requirements and permit conditions.

AQMD Technical Consultation Service. AQMD provides free technical consultations, either by telephone or on site at your business, with permit applications and compliance assistance.

Dry Cleaner's Guide to Clean Air

Certified Permitting Professionals. AQMD certifies specially trained individuals who successfully pass a written exam as Certified Permitting Professionals (CPP). CPPs help companies prepare applications for AQMD permits.

Air Quality Assistance Fund (AQAF). If you are planning to purchase new equipment that requires an air pollution permit, you may be eligible to participate in the AQAF loan guaranty program, intended to help reduce the costs of complying with our rules and regulations.

Federal agency resources

EPA Design for the Environment Garment and Textile Care Program.   Since 1992, EPA has worked with the dry cleaning industry to reduce exposure to perchloroethylene or "perc," the chemical solvent used by most dry cleaners. This website includes information on EPA’s relationship to the dry cleaning industry and research conducted by the EPA on dry cleaning and professional wet cleaning.

EPA Region V Dry Cleaners Page.    EPA Region V covers the states of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. This website includes a general overview of wet cleaning and an update on events related to wet cleaning.

International Fabricare Institute (IFI) is a nationally-based dry cleaning association founded to provide a focus for solving problems and providing education and assistance to its membership. Information related to professional wet cleaning on this website includes a calendar of wet cleaning training seminars sponsored by IFI and an information packet on wet cleaning. IFI is currently developing a certification program for professional wet cleaning.

Academic institutes & resources

Massachusetts Toxic Use Reduction Institute (TURI) is a multidisciplinary research, education, and technical support center located at the University of Massachusetts. The Institute is located within the School of Engineering at the Lowell Campus. This website provides information on a wet clean demonstration site in Massachusetts site by TURI.

The Pollution Prevention Education and Research Center (PPERC), located at UCLA and Occidental College, offers classes, developed curricula, conducts research, and sponsors a variety of outreach activities to promote the principles of pollution prevention across a range of disciplines and institutions. PPERC’s Garment Care Project conducts research and provides education on pollution prevention alternatives to perchloroethylene-based dry cleaning. This website provides information on research conducted by PPERC on professional wet cleaning and dry cleaning and technical resource information for professional cleaners interested in wet cleaning.
