Internal combustion engines are used to power a variety of portable
equipment categories, including, but not limited to:
Generally, portable engines with a brake horsepower rating of
50 HP or more can be operated
within the jurisdiction of the South Coast Air Quality Management District
(AQMD) provided an AQMD Permit to Operate or PERP Registration has been
issued for the equipment.
The exceptions to this rule include:

a limited number of
portable engine
categories that are ineligible for PERP Registration;
and
-
an even smaller category (Tier 0
engines) that cannot participate in either PERP or AQMD's permitting
program.

What's New!
CARB is currently accepting PERP applications for:
-
engines that meet the current tier standard.
-
resident Tier 1 and Tier 2 engines that do not
meet the most stringent emission standard in effect at the time of
registration. Increased registration fees will apply, including retroactive
registration fees, retroactive inspection fees, and current registration
fees based on the year of purchase, year of manufacture, or Tier 2 start
date.

all Tier 1 engines
and Tier 2 engines rated between
100 BHP and 750 BHP if documentation of
operation in California at any time between March 1, 2004, and October 1,
2006, is submitted with the application. Documentation may include company
equipment inventory, purchase records, usage records, or maintenance
records. Form 2A must be submitted with the residency documentation.

Tier 2 engines purchased within six months after the change to Tier 3. No
additional fees are required for these engines.
